Who Is Pope Leo XIV?

The First American Pope and the Unbroken Line of Saint Peter

On May 8, 2025, history was made when Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to ascend to the papacy. His election not only represents a significant moment for the Catholic Church in the United States but also underscores the universal nature of the Church and the enduring tradition of apostolic succession.

Meet Pope Leo XIV

Robert Francis Prevost was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. The son of a French-Italian father and a Spanish mother, he grew up in a multicultural household. He studied mathematics and philosophy at Villanova University and later joined the Order of St. Augustine.

Ordained in 1982, he spent much of his early priesthood serving as a missionary in Peru, where he became rector of a seminary and later a diocesan administrator. His work in Peru was so impactful that he became a naturalized Peruvian citizen, making him the first pope with dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship.

In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, responsible for overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide. He was made a cardinal in January 2025, just months before his election to the papacy.

The Importance of His Election

Pope Leo XIV’s election reflects the Church’s evolving global presence. As the first pope from the United States and Latin America (by naturalization), his leadership bridges cultures and regions.

From the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, his first words to the world were simple and profound:
"Peace be with all of you!"

He expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and called for unity, peace, and dialogue in today’s complex world.

The Succession of Peter

According to Catholic teaching, the pope is the successor of Saint Peter, whom Christ appointed as the head of His Church:
"You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church." (Matthew 16:18)

This line of succession, called apostolic succession, has continued unbroken for over two millennia. Pope Leo XIV is now the 267th successor of Saint Peter, entrusted with shepherding the Church and defending the faith.

A Papacy of Hope and Renewal

Pope Leo XIV takes office at a time when the Church faces both challenges and opportunities:

  • Addressing past scandals

  • Supporting growing Catholic populations in the Global South

  • Navigating social and moral questions in a changing world

With his pastoral experience, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to service, many Catholics around the world are hopeful for a papacy marked by compassion, unity, and evangelization.
